Where Is Your Dinner From?

This is a question that just doesn't cross most people's minds when they toss a package of chicken breasts or steaks into their shopping carts. However, it should.

Now, I'm not preaching to you about eating meat or not eating meat; I eat meat myself. But, I want to bring to attention, exactly what most of these animals go through before being slaughtered and shipped off to your grocery store.

So what exactly happens on a factory farm?

Nothing short of animal abuse.

  • Debeaking: Birds beaks are cut off without the use of anestesia

  • Use of Battery Cages: Cages no larger than 16 inches that house four or five hens in one cage.

  • Electric cattle prods  are used on animals that aren't cooperating or moving fast enough
  • Animals are skinned while still alive.

I could go on and on, but to be honest, just thinking about this makes me sick. The horrid treatment of these innocent animals is appalling.

What's worse? It's legal! This is 100% animal abuse, in my opinion, and the people who treat these animals this way should be ashamed of themselves!!

So what can I do about it?

There are several ways to fight back. The ASPCA lists 10 Ways You Can Help Fight Factory Farms. Not the least of which is knowing where your meal comes from! There are many farms that are cleaning up their practices which makes for better treatment of the animals and healthier food for you!

For more information on the practice of farm factories check out the ASPCA's information on the subject here.
